Ulterior Intersections

25 January – 15 February 15, 2013
Vera & Melchor de Arcenegui, NY

Vera & Melchor de Arcenegui is pleased to present Ulterior Intersections, a group exhibition including oeuvres by Timothy Hutchings, Paul Loughney, Valentina Gonzalez-Wohlers, Donna Huanca, Lupe-Toys, Iliana Ortega, Andrés Ramírez Gaviria, and Alan Ruiz.

What is the boundary between limits? How to transcend those intervals? Ulterior Intersections analyzes continuity and extended phases of space among minimalist aesthetics.  Each structure considers its own physicality, recognizing similarities among contrasts, and suggesting a correspondence between opposite poles.

Within Ulterior Intersections, Alan Ruiz investigates quality of space among private and public fields, intervening peripheral structures by inverting visual patterns. Paul Luoghney constructs a conglomeration of anthropomorphic forms in distorted interiors, reflecting on the familiar and unrecognizable. Iliana Ortega unravels riddles of light over an obscure path by investigating the transversality of materials at play, Ortega has conceived the surface as a possible source of illumination. Ramírez Gaviria questions semantic limits of structures within spatial and temporal realms. Through a confrontation of stillness with motion, a static quadrilateral transforms into an imploded prism. Moreover, Timothy Hutchings provokes a subtle translation of bodies within a contingent stance. He intersects optics with parallel planes, suggesting continuity as a mental construction. Gonzalez-Wohlers envisions extended phases of space through materiality, manifesting overtly as a symptom of an empty living space. Huanca juxtaposes subject with object, pondering upon functionality while reconfiguring shapes. Lupe Toys epitomizes continuity through a conversations among organic forms, enabling a place to move within its neighboring borders.

Ulterior Intersections analyzes how the boundary of a space facilitates the understanding of a continuous area, rather than an open space without frontiers. Every path allows us to explore the essence of space; and as that space would not otherwise exist, we create it even as we discover it.
