El cuerpo medular de la obra de Michelle-Marie Letelier está basado en estudios de paisaje, particularmente en zonas en las que recursos minerales son explotados.

Letelier vivió ocho años de su vida temprana en Chuquicamata. Cuando el campamento estaba siendo enterrado, la artista volvió para documentar este proceso utilizando video y fotografía. El reasentamiento de los antiguos habitantes, el cambio del paisaje y las consecuencias perceptibles para el medio ambiente fueron algunos de los temas en los que la artista pudo trabajar a partir del material que originó.

Desde que se mudó a Berlín en 2007, Letelier se ha centrado no sólo con el cobre, sino también con el carbón. Este mineral le ha interesado trabajar, por un lado, como la fuente de energía originalmente más importante de Alemania, y por otro, con el uso material del mineral como objeto de sus trabajos.
