Malu Stewart

Born in 1962 in Chile
Lives and works in Santiago, Chile

I studied an art major with mention in painting of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and Post Graduate in fine arts at the Slade School of Fine Art in London.

I define my work within the margins of painting, displacing from tradicional technics by the use of diverse materials (ex: polystyrene, plastics, mashed minerals, molding paste, pipe cleaners, etc) and the formats in which they are supported (canvas, walls, acrylics and wood).I take as a referente the circle as the basic unity of visual language –already studied by the pointillism and the photomechanics-.

In my work there is a particular tension between what the handmade and the industrial, both because of the use of the circle as a module for the configuration of images -emulating the screen-print grid-.

In my last works I have develop an investigation through making a contemporary transfer from Claude Monet’s work, recognizing it as an important base in contemporary painting, but reread from a representative and technical point of view, where I make a visual translation of an oil painting, converting the work in a territory of optic, chromatic and texture experimentation.

Throughout my work my interest has been focused in the creation of an own language, original and abstract, through the use of materials.
