Nicolas Mastracchio

Born in 1983 in Argentina
Lives and works in Buenos Aires, Argentina

I work with studio photography without postproduction, on the border between reality and fiction. This technique allows me to create a controlled image that I associate with the strategies and aesthetic conventions of advertising, politics and the media. The starting points of my work are the artificial space of photography and its mechanisms to induce suspicion and ambiguity.

I have developed a system for making an image. I choose everyday objects that are usually perceived in an automatic way—it could be a coin, a net, a rope— to photograph them in a staged context that positions them beyond their implicit function. At first glance, the scenes that I construct resemble commercial devices or digital renders. I use this mechanism to slow down the act of perception. My aim is that each object be read between the lines, reactivate many senses, and generate questions that gravitate towards new questions.
