Gustavo Buntinx

Gustavo Buntinx is a historian, curator, and critic. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University in 1978 and has taught in various postgraduate schools in Latin America. His books and exhibitions often explore the relationship between art and violence, art and politics, and art and religion. After directing the Lima Art Museum and the Museum of Italian Art of San Marcos, between 2001 and 2006 he became the Managing Director of the Cultural Center of San Marcos. He was the General Curator of the Biennial of Photography I Lima (2011), and for three decades has acted as a “driver” of Micromuseo (“al fondo hay sitio”), exchanging the old empty Peruvian museum proposals for a counterpoint of mixed museality, a promiscuous museality, a commoner museality. In addition to undertaking multiple interventions in the local scene, this cultural vehicle was invited to participate in ambitious exhibitions at the Biennial of Valencia (2007) and the first Triennial of Chile (2009).

Buntinx is also a founding member of several civic and academic institutions. These include the Collective Civil Society (2000-2001), the group that created the action “Wash the flag” and other civic rituals with great popular support that played an important role in the cultural overthrow of the dictatorship of Alberto Fujimori and Vladimiro Montesinos.
