Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Universidade de São Paulo (MAC-USP)

Founded in 1963 in São Paulo, Brazil

The Contemporary Art Museum was created in 1963 when the University of São Paulo received as a donation the collection from the old MAM of São Paulo: a donation composed by the collections of the couple Yolanda Penteado and Ciccillo Matarazzo, by the collections of works acquired or received as donations during the existence of the old MAM, and by the prizes of the Biennial of São Paulo until 1961.

With this rich collection, where we find among others, works by Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, Wassily Kandinsky, Tarsila do Amaral, Anita Malfatti, Emiliano Di Cavalcanti, Alfredo Volpi, Lygia Clark and a wonderful collection of Italian art of the early twentieth century, the new museum contributes to the principal purpose of the University : the pursuit of knowledge and its dissemination in society.
