Barbara Palomino

Born in 1982 in Sao Paulo, Brasil
Lives and works in Santiago, Chile

The artistic research of Bárbara Palomino has been focused on what she called as ‘textiles displacements’, an exploration which combines traditional methods of textile art with different medias and interactive experiences, to emphasize the importance of handmade processes and the haptic perception of physical spaces, establishing a dialogue between the work and the context that hosts, in order that the history of the place can be part of the production. In them, converge questions related to the everyday practices, the importance of handmade operations, and the presence of textiles in a cultural and social sense as well as reflections about subjective memory, the polyphony of localized testimonies and its relationship with the urban tissue. Her methods call into questions the notions of techné, technology and technique, and emphasize the need to identify with other areas of perception, not essentially visual. Although, they appear to arise from a hybrid territory, but the hand of the textile as a concept, question and structure or matter, is always present in her work, and in most of them she integrates the temporary involved in textiles practice, either using handmade process that involves obsessive operations often involving redirecting the parent state of a prefabricated material, or evidencing the processes involved in the textile practice, to demonstrate their role as sensory cadastres.
